HOW DID YOU MET
We met at Mona Vale Pub back in 2008, Cam used to work at the bar.
YOUR ENGAGEMENT STORY
In January 2015 when we were over in Brazil visiting my family, with broken Portuguese Cam asked my mum for my hand in marriage. What he understood as the answer defined our next year, he understood she asked him to wait for the next time she was over in Australia to propose when what she said was that she just wanted to celebrate with us. As the good man he is, he waited and a year later and a week before my families’ arrival in Australia he proposed with a “message in a bottle” at Freshwater Beach headland overlooking the water where we had spent our first NYE together. It was Magical!
WHAT MARRIAGE MEANS TO YOU
Cam and I were engaged before we really understood what marriage meant to us, all we knew was that we wanted to build a life together. It took us a few years of deep and meaningful conversations with each other and others to really define the meaning of marriage for us.It was only beginning of 2019 the light went on and we realized it was simpler than we were making it out to be. It was exactly what we knew at first, it was about us building a life together.
WEDDING LOCATION/ VENUE
During the few years we were engaged we thought about getting married all over the world, a destination wedding, a road trip wedding or an isolated wedding. We were overwhelmed with so many options and again losing track of what was important. In one of our researches, we found Alison, our wedding planner online and we had a connection straight away, we mentioned the Royal National Park and she showed us this waterfall picture, we were in love with this place at first sight. We went to spend a day at the waterfall a few months before the big day and it was so romantic and meaningful, we had no doubt that was our place.
Cam and I love markets in general they are usually unique and a gathering of like-minded people. It was after the Avalon market that a friend of mine who is also engaged took me to this shop “Natalie Marie” in Avalon to check the rings out. They were exactly what I had in mind.
PREPARATION – COUNTDOWN BEGINS
The preparation of our wedding was amazing, it was our big secret, none of our friends or families knew about our plan and it was so special to decide for things on our own without thinking about other ‘s opinions. The day could not have been planned in a more honest and special way that suited us so perfectly, we did not have anyone to impress and that was freedom.
Right after Cam proposed when we did not know what we were going to do if ever we were going to have a party or a celebration of a sort I was walking down the shops and spotted this dress, it was everything I wanted for the day, simple, humble and honest. Just like our day ended up being.
Well the shoes were a little annoyance. I had these old boots I was planning on wearing for the hike, 10 days before the wedding I decided to try them on with the dress given I only had a mental image or it and realised the boots soles had come off. I took it to the shoe repairer, and they wanted to charge me 3 times the price of the boots just to fix it. I said, ok maybe time to buy new ones. I looked at all shops I could think of and there was just nothing remotely like what I wanted, until I found the perfect hiking boots online, except we were 7 days to the big day. They arrived just in time and the rest is history.
If there was something, we knew right from the beginning it was that we were not going to have bridesmaids or groomsman. These are part of some of the wedding traditions that do not fit in our believes.
HAIR & MAKEUP
My hair was done a couple of days before as I wanted it to be very natural. The make-up was done by Ash an excellent make-up artist. I was a little scared of not looking myself as this was the first time I had a full make up done, but she did an amazing job.
THE FLOWERS & BOUQUETS
Flowers have always been a bitter and sweet thing for me. Maybe because I don’t like the fact they are cut dead before made out to be a bouquet or because they remind me of loved ones who have passed. I questioned myself a few times whether or not I wanted a bouquet. I changed my mind a few times but ended up deciding to go with a hair piece and bouquet, I wanted the day to be happy and colorful and they fulfilled their purpose perfectly.
Cam and I went to a couple of placed to find his outfit but once we tried the one there was no further doubts in our minds. He looked so handsome!
We drove our old honda civic (Trevor) to the park and hiked to the waterfall.
We met with a few celebrants along the way, it was very important for us to have someone who understood the meaning of our day for us, someone who would respect some of our not so standard traditions and Andrea was so humble and open. She brought the feminine beauty and calmness to the day.
We had our spiritual mentor doing most of the talk, he did an amazing job in speaking about love on a more spiritual and deeper meaning.
We had no music, we decided to go with the nature’s own sounds, it was easier to be there in the moment without music. The waterfall was loud and it sounded like it was celebrating the day with us.
Alison Hughes, she was the best planner we could have had. She knew what she was doing but most importantly she listened to us. She helped us find the best vendor’s out there.
The style was very us. From sleeping in nature and enjoying a coffee around the fire overlooking the river to walking barefoot to the waterfall. It was us connecting to the universe and each other.
RECEPTION DÉCOR & DETAILS
When speaking to Rychelle, our stylist for the first time I only had a few things clear in my mind, she was able to combine those and make it work so well. She is terrific at finding solutions for space and décor. Could not have picked a better person to style our day, she puts her heart in every single detail.
We only had a message we wrote to our families and closest friends, we sent it after our wedding, we mentioned our reasons for eloping and made sure they knew we were caring them in our hearts during the entire day.
Cam and I are obsessed with honey cake, it was a mission to find a true Russian Honey Cake maker and Alison found her. The cake was AMAZING!
FOOD & BEVERAGES
We had all catering prepared for us for the whole 2 days we were camping in the park.
Alison found Emma and she was exactly the person we had in mind, a genuine, vibrant and friendly being as well as a fantastic photographer. She also found our videographer (Ro) who was so genuine and hilarious. Both worked so well together and almost went unnoticed.
YOUR MOST MEMORABLE MOMENT
The entire day, there was so much presence in the day. There were points of the day we had to stop to take a deep breath, there was a lot to take in...I mean, how do you choose between a toasted banana bread on the fire, a breathtaking waterfall and sunset or the spoils of the food and picnic setups?!?!
HONEYMOON TIME BABY!!!
We drove straight out of the Royal National Park and hoped on a plane to Hamilton Island, we wanted it to be about us, about enjoying each other and not caring about anything else. We had all food in the hotel or nearby, we spent every day down the beach.
